Civic Duty

Top Five Events in Eric’s Life:

1 – His own birth.
2 – His marriage.
3 – The birth of Will.
4 – The birth of Walker.
5 – Election day (any of them)

Election day is always filled with excitement. The news media keeps us on our seats as the counting begins. Pollsters frantically ask for details on voting information and report back. And Eric’s cheeks always glow with the excitement of it all. It is honestly one of my favorite times to be around him.

We talk about all the issues. We debate on the issues. He talks. I talk. He talks some more. I stop listening. I get riled up and start talking (and listening) again. He gets riled up too.

Today we drove from our new home back to our old town to cast our ballots. The boys fell asleep in the car and we had 45 minutes to review the measures, talk through the candidates, and compare votes. He gets as giddy as an eight-year-old at Christmas (when they are still excited but haven’t heard the news…).

We show up at the polling place – listen to the directions – get our names crossed off – and then perform our civic duty. For me it’s exciting. For Eric it is defining.

You can probably guess that we both voted for Obama. We have different reasons for why him – or for why not McCain. We also proudly voted No on 8. We both feel strongly about this and would be happy to discuss, in person, with any of you.

No doubt we’ll be glued to the sole radio we have in our house all night.

Happy Election Day everyone.

I love Election Day too, so does GJ. Obviously we don’t vote in CA anymore, but I’m really hoping a similar proposition comes back for voting. And go Obama! I am really excited to watch his presidency.
